This would be an open web service that would allow users to browse, tag and share bookmarks.

Ideally it should:

  • Allow users to bulk import collections of bookmarks from Delicious and other sources
  • Have an open source code base and a distributed architecture, which allowed anyone to set up and run their own instance (a bit like Wordpress or the Identi.ca service)
  • Have an easy to use API allowing people to deploy tools to analyse and represent material from instances of the service
  • Allow users to download data in bulk under an open data license

For those not aware, StatusNet earlier this month released freelish.us which has the ability to import bookmarks from Delicious.

One concern I've had with conversations I've seen about these kinds of alternatives is that they appear to focus on the individual user and not address the value that comes from network effects, subscription to others, to popular tags, and bulk data analysis. Delicious is pretty good about that, that's how I've found it most valuable, and I hope that new alternatives will do even better.

What if the instance can include an entire community? Then there is more likely to be communication between the members, even if it is only a fraction of all users.

There’s a related effort called unalog:

Source code is on bitbucket:

Unalog originated in the library tech community a number of years ago, and now would seem like a great time to collaborate on it.

StatusNet supports decentralized publishing and Oembed for links. There are also #hashtags and a number of bulk import and export options.
